Recovering After a House Fire: Remy & Sam’s Story

Life with a service dog isn't easy, but when trauma happens it can be devastating.

That's what happened to Sam and her service dog Remy.

They experienced a house fire and lost their home and belongings.

Today I want to share Sam & Remy's story about how the house fire has impacted their lives.

And how we can help them recover after their loss.

Just How Devastating Are House Fires?

According to the U.S. Fire Administration, in 2021 there were:

  • 353,500 fires
  • 2840 deaths
  • 11,400 injuries
  • and 8,855,900,000 dollars lost in house fires.

That is an estimated 25,000 dollars lost per house fire!

This year (2024) there have been 13 fight fighter fatalities, and 512 home deaths reported.

Now I have never experienced a house fire, but I know it would be absolutely devastating for a family.

Not only losing their belongings, but the cost of rebuilding your life afterward is catastrophic.

Think about it. One day you have to get up and get a new house, new furniture, new kitchen supplies, groceries, clothing, basic grooming supplies.

I don't know about you, but the bill in my head is astonishing right now.

And if we take into account the estimated loss per family, that's 25k that families go into debt trying to rebuild their lives. That's not including any other debt they have.

And that is why it's so essential to support others.

Sam & Remy's Story

Meet Remy, a Bernese Mountain Dog/ Golden Retriever mix who works for his human, Sam.

Sam suffers from chronic illness which has caused her to become disabled and needs Remy's aid.

Just like my sd, Koda, this adorable pup has a big job and keeps his mom safe.

In February, electrical issues displaced Sam, Remy, and their family and caused them to move to a hotel temporarily.

While many electricians visited the home. They deemed it safe for the family to live in. They were wrong.

The family home was lost due to a fire that started in the wiring of the home.

They lost all their possessions and memories in fire, smoke, and water damage from the firemen's efforts to contain the blaze.

Thankfully, there was no loss of life, but the family's security has been taken away from them as they are once again displaced and now have no belongings and little funds to support them while they wait for insurance companies.

This family has lost everything and needs help to thrive again.
